Kathy McGrath

Kathy is currently the director of music at Visitation Parish in Los Angeles and has been involved in church music since age 11. An accomplished pianist, arranger, and composer, Kathy earned both bachelor and master’s degrees in music from Loyola Marymount and California State Northridge, respectively.

During her time at Loyola Marymount University, Kathy had the privilege to study with renowned choral director Paul Salamunovich and sing in the LMU Choruses under his direction. At California State University, Northridge, Kathy studied jazz and arranging as well as traditional classical repertoire and composition, and received the Excellence in Ensemble Playing/Trio Award. She served on the LMU Music Faculty for 10 years as an adjunct professor in the piano department, where she was nominated for Instructor of the Year, and also received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the California Association of Professional Music Teachers.

As a composer, Kathy has published sacred compositions with Oregon Catholic Press, GIA Publications, and Morningstar Publications, and won the Church of the Servant Composition Competition with collaborator Carol Browning in 2014. She has been featured several times as the main pianist for the closing liturgies at the Religious Education Congress and has worked with Catholic church music notables such as Bob Hurd, Curtis Stephan, ValLimar Jansen, Marty Haugen, and Liam Lawton. In addition to her extensive studio experience, Kathy has served as musical director for many local musical theater productions, most notably in the Los Angeles debut of the Tony-nominated “Baby It’s You.”

In addition to her work with the church, Kathy composes incidental music for film and television, is a certified Yamaha Piano Instructor with Crystal Cruise Lines, and performs with an 8 piece R & B band with her husband Michael.
