Feast of Christ the King

On Thanksgiving
When asked “What is your favorite holiday celebration?” I know that I am supposed to say “Easter” because, as St. Paul wrote, without the Resurrection our faith has no meaning. And of course there’s Christmas, because where would Easter be if there was no Christmas? But my favorite holiday celebration is Thanksgiving. No need to buy presents, no greeting cards expected, just family and friends getting together to be with each other and eat a meal. Throughout the years, this national celebration has taken on a more religious feel. More people come to our Thanksgiving mass than our Holy Days of Obligation. We have a sense that at this time, we must pray, we must give thanks to God. So, for your Thanksgiving dinner, I am sending along a prayer that your family might want to use this Thursday.

O Gracious God, we give you thanks for your overflowing generosity to us. Thank you for the blessings of the food we eat and especially for this feast today. Thank you for our home and family and friends, especially for the presence of those gathered here. Thank you for our health, our work and our play. Please send help to those who are hungry, alone, sick and suffering war and violence. Open our hearts to your love. We ask your blessing through Christ your Son. Amen.
